Mel Gibson is planning to retire after eight years on screen.

The Oscar-winning director revealed the news during a panel at the Academy Awards ceremony Monday night, and said he would be making an announcement about his future next week.

“I’m doing a movie with a guy who is my favorite person,” Gibson said.

“He’s a good guy, I like him, and he’ll be getting an Oscar soon.
